Aurora Displays ALERT: A CIR is Expected to HIT Earth's Magnetic Field Today

A G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm watch is in effect for 27 and 28 February due to anticipated effects associated with a coronal hole high speed stream. https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/

The action begins later today when a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. CIRs are shock-like structures at the leading edge of solar wind streams. There's a 50% chance of G1-class geomagnetic storms today, increasing to 55% tomorrow as the solar wind behind the CIR surrounds our planet. Arctic auroras could descend to northern-tier US states such as Maine, Minnesota, and Michigan.
